My Kitchen Year by Ruth Reichl is the perfect combination of story, amazing recipes, and gorgeous photographs!!!! The writing chronicles her journey after the demise of Gourmet magazine as she searched for herself and the next step in her life. The recipes correspond with what she was making and feeling and the seasons. The recipes sound AMAZING!!! My copy is studded with post it’s marking the recipes I want to try. The photographs, of her world and her food, enhance the book.
She is wise about cooking and the journey and the importance of it but challenges you to make recipes your own. The recipes are not daunting for a home cook and celebrate the ingredients. Usually my cookbooks are divided into ones to read & enjoy the pictures and ones to cook from, this is both!!! Excellent, beautiful, approachable, must add to your cookbook collection!!
I decided to make Lemon Pudding Cake. It is said to be perfect for “ someone in an extreme state of indecision.” That was definitely me! Couldn’t decide which recipe to start with but this was delicious!! Very lemony and full of textures. A bottom layer of pudding topped by a cake like layer. We ate it warm out of the oven and the next day my husband reheated the leftovers and enjoyed it again. It was not hard to make and the result was worth it!!
My Kitchen Year is 5 star!!!! I highly recommend you add it to your cookbook collection!!!
