It’s Thursday and I’m revisiting another of my favorite cookie recipes. This week its Chocolate Chip Dainties Cookies, a buttery chocolate chip cookie with ends dipped in chocolate. Yum!!

Chocolate Chip Dainties Cookies

This is one of those cookies my Mom made when I was growing up but only at Christmas time. It added a fancier Chocolate Chip Cookie version to our Christmas Cookie plate.  Not sure where the name came from, guess it is supposed to indicate that the cookies are fancier or daintier than Chocolate Chip Cookies. When I got married and started my own Holiday traditions this cookie usually appeared. My daughters liked it but after a while I got tired of it, dipping both ends of the cookie was messy!! Eventually this cookie started to appear less and less often.

 

When I made it this time I wanted to make them just a little different. Instead of making the cookies as logs I rolled out the dough and cut them into rectangles (I used a pizza cutter). Instead of dipping both ends in melted chocolate chips I “iced” (used a knife and covered the tops and sides like I was icing a cake) just 1 end. In my opinion this makes all the difference!! The cookie to chocolate ratio is perfect and it’s much less messy to coat and to eat.

Now they remind me of giant half-moon cookies we used to get at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD. We used to go to the Inner Harbor every few months when I was growing up and explore and have lunch and after lunch we would sometimes get giant cookies, a cross between shortbread and sugar cookie, half of which was covered in chocolate. They were so, so yummy and these Chocolate Chip Dainties remind me of them!!

Best way to eat these, alternates small bites of plain cookie with chocolate coated cookie. This gives the best taste experience!!

Chocolate Chip Dainties Cookies Revisited

Yield: 3 dozen cookies

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup butter
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pkg (12 oz) chocolate chips
  • 2 ¼ cups flour
  • ½ tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. Cream ¾ cup butter and sugar until fluffy.
  3. Add egg and vanilla extract.
  4. Mix in flour and salt.
  5. Stir in half package of chocolate chips.
  6. Roll dough into a 9x11 rectangle.
  7. Cut dough into sticks.
  8. Place on parchment paper lined baking sheets.
  9. Bake 10-12 minutes.
  10. When cookies have cooled melt remaining chocolate chips.
  11. Ice 1 end of cookies with chocolate.
